On to the topic for this month

Finish this sentence…

“Mindset is to an entrepreneur like _______ is to ________”

No doubt you have made some New Years resolutions.

Set some new goals to be achieved in 2016.

Perhaps some of them were old goals carried over from 2015

Have you ever wondered why you don’t achieve a lot of your goals?

Or why you still have THAT goal that you keep dragging through every year?

Is it because you don’t really know how to set a goal?

That’s not it. You have been taught how to set goals that you will achieve. You know about setting S.M.A.R.T. goals. (Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Realistic and Time-based) Visualising yourself achieving the goal, feeling into it and all that. This is the stuff you know already!

Is it because your goals are just too far out there? The BHAG (Big, Hairy, Audacious Goal) that’s just a little too big and hairy? There may be a little bit of that, but seeing as you understand the A and R parts (Achievable and Realistic) of a S.M.A.R.T goal I know your goals are just the right amount of Big and Hairy.

So that can’t be it either.

What is it then?

Are you ready for the big reveal??

What is keeping you from hitting that goal and what makes you set the same goal over and over without any success on the outcome is your MINDSET!

Einstein said” We cannot solve our problems with the same thinking that created them”

What is a mindset?

I’m sure you have heard of people seeing the glass as half full or half empty, right?

What is being referred to here is mindset. Your mindset is a set of ideas and attitudes that shapes the way someone sees themselves and the world.

Clare Graves was an American professor of psychology and originator of the theory of Growth and Fixed mindsets.

Someone with a growth mindset usually has a positive outlook on life. They will welcome challenges, are keen to learn, understand their weaknesses and want to improve on them and recognize that failure is an opportunity to learn.

Someone with a fixed mindset usually has a negative or cynical outlook on life. They see their abilities as limited such as being a creative, or athletic, they have a lot of negative self talk, shy away from their mistakes and avoid challenges.

I believe that we all have some growth and some fixed mindset, but we are dominant in one of them.

Having a growth mindset or a half glass full mindset will enable you to learn new things in your business. Take on challenges  as they arise and not give up when things don’t work out the way you planned.

Life and business is full of ups and downs. The key is, it’s not what happens to you, it’s how you choose to respond to what has happened to you and it is your mindset that will determine your response.

You can learn all the strategies and tactics available for your business but if you have a mindset that is pessimistic then you will find creating a successful business much more difficult.

Alas, never fear! You CAN change your mindset. And if you know you have a growth mindset you can learn tools to enhance it and give you even better results. Results that the top 5% of people in the world achieve!

The choice is yours.

To finish off the sentence, “mindset is to entrepreneurs like water is to fish” Vital!
